We should be able to delete threads that we started ourselves.

Man I've been wanting this option for a while! Except instead of having the ability to delete threads be able to delete post! Only our own of course...

PM any mod and they'll delete/Close it for you asap.

Just as DriftGirl said, PM any mod and we'll take care of it. There is no need to give a member this control. It will only make disorderly conduct harder to catch because members will be allowed to delete their posts before a moderator could catch up. Plus, regular members have the control to edit their posts. VIP 101 members do not have this option until they become a Regular member.
