I've just purchased a wrecked Y32 cima and was wondering the compatibility of switching parts to one another - would the Y32's struts fit nicely into the Y31? I know they have unique tops and what not, I just don't really wanna buy a whole new set of adjusties for the Y31(sitting on busted adjusties >:() and was thinking of switching them over from the Y32 (currently has the legit adjustibles in it) to the Y31.
Cheers guys

Ok, the fronts are definitely different, although from my measurements the tops are the same. Its just a different strut body design

Where are you? How much of the interior/etc is left? I may be interested in a few parts which would help offset the cost of the wreck! (parts i am after would be unique to the Y32 so prob not too much use to you anyway)

When you say you are on busted adjustables, do you mean coilovers with a threaded spring perch? Why not get them rebuilt? I was quoted AUD$165/strut to have coilovers fully rebuilt to my own specifications...

Cheers, so what's so differnt is it just the initial length of the strut? - As for the Y32 yes the interior is all still there, its only missing it's engine and few exterior panels.

The design of the attached spindle on the front struts is different. I will try to search for some pics of each strut to show you the difference...
The rears have different strut tops, not sure about the length

What colour interior?
Does it have both wing mirrors?
Door handles?

Ahh I see so it'll probably be a no go, I still have my original suspension for the Y31 but with no springs - threw away the cutties when I purchased adjusties, but kept the struts as they're unique an hard to get... any idea if the springs would be compatible to go into the Y31 struts as I just want it to be able to get up and moving so I can get her fixed up.

Dark grey interior, door handles yep, mirrors (cracked, some rust)

Not sure about the springs. I have never seen a coil suspensioned Y31 Cima strut (mine are airbag struts)

If you are just trying to get up and running, you should look into R31 skylines, Z31 Fairlady's ('86 or so 300ZX), as they had similar suspension setups. What about getting one of those cheap ebay coilover kits, so you can use the springs, adjustable perches and strut tops? Would get you out of trouble for now (might require some customisation though)

How come you cant drive on the adjustables?

As for the Y32 parts, could you send me an email to dbloemhard@yahoo.com? I can give you a list of specific items that i want, and you can tell me how much you want for them. I have been trying to buy from Yahoo auctions in Japan, but its easier dealing with someone in English :)

Also, i wouldnt mind seeing some pics so i can figure out which parts are the same (are the foglights still intact?)

Hey Dominik

I had heard the Y31 suspension is similar to the R31, but how similar? I know the R31 can run S13 coilovers, if you change the LCA's over, is this the same for the Y31? (Assuming you swap over the strut tops)

I have been planning to find out myself, but none of my mates are willing to donate their coilovers for a weekend as yet :(

I am aware of the possibility of running S13 coilovers in the rear, but I have not found any real facts on weather it is poossible with the front

Hey,

I never tried putting S13 coilovers on my cima. The deal with the R31 struts is that the caliper mounts are different and you need to use a R31 brake rotor/hub. This means inferior brakes and 4x100 wheel studs.

A lot of R31 peeps use Y31 fronts to get the bigger brakes and 5 stud conversion

Rears should be similar - I actually went to SSS Automotive in Girraween to get a set of S13 rears for my cima, but when I went there they had a pair of Y31 rears hanging there! $100 and they were mine! LOL... Pretty sure you need the Cima strut tops though, as I don’t even think the R31s are the same.

You can look at www.R31skylineclub.com for more info on the S13 front strut conversion. Havent seen it done for a Cima before, but it would be interesting having more control over the camber. One thing though I remember reading that it changes the offset of the fronts quite a bit... Makes the wheels stick out further if I recall correctly...

If you want to do it, see SSS and get a shitty pair of S13 front coilovers for the $100-150 mark. You would need to look at what other parts you need (hub, LCA etc), and most likely a set of Y31 upper mounts
