View Full Version : Engine swaps into Y33? Any info out there on VK45/56 swaps?
I've been tossing a couple of ideas around for when the VH41 bites the dust but I had a couple of requirements....
1) It needs to have some balls...at least 13 second 1/4 mile potential
2) Still want an auto...my 240 is an LS1/T56 6 speed and the Y33 is my daily, luxury car so I want it to be different but would consider a manual valvebody auto
3) Get better gas mileage than stock....going to need at least 5 gears in the auto
4) Would rather stay N/A, but if I decide to go Forced Induction, I want at least a little aftermarket support
-VQ35DE - Satisfies pretty much all of them (will most likely need some boost to make it fast) but I wonder how sturdy the auto trannies are?
-VK45/56 - Really liking this option..building something in the middle like a 5L VK might be nice. I did some searching to see if anyone has done this, but couldn't find anything online. Anyone have any info? I assume it would physically fit just fine since the Y33 and F50 chassis are pretty similar...oil pan and headers would probably have no clearance issues, but electronics could potentially be a nightmare unless I go standalone.
-LS1 - So many options...iron blocks that can reach 400+ cubic inches would give plenty of power in N/A form, there is a huge aftermarket, I already have one in my 240 so I'm very familiar with it, it's easy to work on, tons of transmission options that I can put a Gear Vendors overdrive on to have a 6 speed auto that is bulletproof and shift it manually w/out a clutch should I choose.
The only downside I see to the LSx is that I already have one in my 240 (and it won't be quite as smooth as the VK or VQ option). However, that is also a plus in the fact that I can salvage parts off one car to get the other running in a pinch. Not to mention I could eventually make them both have the same suspension as well.

im looking to do a swap as well but the more simple route VQ30det or 35
VG30det
not thread jacking but what would be the best for the U.S as far as availability and price

Do a LS9
rb bolts right in btw
Thought about it...but what auto tranny to use? Would the VG30DETT auto bolt up? Could still mate a GM tranny to it w/ a little work. I'm kind of partial to something w/ a little torque down low for moving this boat w/out needing to rev, but I do love the RB and my cousin has a spare 26 in his garage.

No, you're not threadjacking at all...
I disagree about the VQ or VG being simpler. The LS1 would be the easiest and far outnumbers the other options with it's aftermarket and availability of parts. Also, the VG is kind of old and outdated...granted it can make plenty of power, but the VQ is superior so I would rather go that route if I was going to use a Nissan V6.

I've seen VQ30DET's on Ebay, but you're right...not the best choice in the US since there are plenty of VQ35s that can make 300 wheel N/A.
which rb? any pics of anyone with the swap?
All RBs should mount the same basically...all the blocks are similar if not the exact same dimension and if you can mount one, you can mount any of them.
Do a LS9
Give me the money and I will, but I'd rather have a 454 cubic inch Warhawk Aluminum Block putting more to the ground than an LS9...and doing it w/out a power adder. The LS9 is overrated when you consider how easy it is to build a better engine for cheaper.

from my experience, with RBs, only the 20 will bolt up directly to the s13 chasis. with the 25 and 26 you have to use the cross member from the skyline front clip. so im wondering if direct bolt up for the Q means you could just drop it in, or do you have to switch out the cross members too. hmmmm... time for me to do some research. i miss my RBs.
I see why a 26 might be difficult due to the oil pan (which is why many use the 25 pan), but what is different between the 20 and 25 pans? Oil pans are the only thing I can think of that would ever require crossmember modification (ex: LS1 S chassis swaps requires cutting and rewelding the stock subframe and the use of a front sump GTO pan).

2JZ GTE or go home! LOL!
Good point...really no downside to the 2J...the stock auto can be built to handle good power, and there are already adapter plates to every GM transmission worth using. Also would be reliable enough to make good power and still be driven daily. Knew I was forgetting a main contender.
Price is honestly it's only downside, but all the other options aren't cheap either, so who am I kidding.

I know that with the Titan motor you will need to swap out the oil pans with that from a F50 Q45 motor and you may need a different intake mani as the truck one is much taller and may not fit under the hood without modding the hood....Been talking to my buddy at Infiniti about this one for a while now. Especially if he gets a Titan motor for free again...

rb25det it would take a little work and probably wouldnt drop right in because of the cross member but there is tons of aftermarket support.. you would be changing from an NA V8 to a turbo I6 and so it would save you gas.. there is tons of power stock and if you want that little bit more of an oomph there are many options to do so. plus i wanna see a Y33 with the hidden intercooler :)

The Y33 was sold from late 1994 through 1998. The VG series engine was replaced with the newly developed VQ series and the displacement of the Straight 6 diesel was reduced from 2.8 to 2.5. AWD ATESA E-TS, found on the Skyline, Laurel and Stagea, was added to the options list. One of the major advantages of the VQ series over the VG series was the aluminum alloy block and heads, helping to reduce weight. This generation of the Cedric is built in LHD for export to Middle East markets.

2.5 L RB25DET

I personally reach towards the VK45DE motor due to the amazing capability. 32valves, dohc, VVT, and amazing potential... think turbo with ITB's ;)

a local shop around me was thinking about buying a y33 and putting a rb25det in there with a 5spd ... and that make sense to me ... power and availability in parts
if i had my way for my car .. i would do a 1jz auto with single aftermarket turbo and call it good ...

Really thats like putting a chevy engine in a mopar....dont do it....but to each is own it would be diffrent...
I'm at 150k on my VH at the moment...still running strong. Hopefully, it'll get me by for another year or two. When the time comes, I'm leaning heavily towards an LSx/4L60E combo for availability of parts and power all the time w/out having to mod much. A 6.2L iron block w/ small cam, nice street friendly torque converter, and some nice L92 heads should net ~450 wheel and be very reliable/streetable w/out the need for a turbo and all the headaches that accompany one. After a lot of thought, I really feel like this is the best option for me, not to mention the cheapest.
But, again, I keep thinking just pick up a junkyard VH and put a 100 shot on it for when I want to play. :)

I had some time to think about this and i take back my previous statement...I think a chev engine in any thing is sick.....those are great engines...a hemi in any thing is sick....great engine....i guess it will be diffrent then the rest...

I personally i am looking into doing the 2j swap. Its cost effective. lots of after market support, good tranny options, best bang for your buck IMO.
good luck with that one.
Although that would be pretty cool to see.
2j swap y33.

How much custom work would you have to do to fit that LSx into the Y33?

Not sure on the LSx Swap, but the Rb26 would use the auto tranny from the R33 (Rb25)
and the VK may match up to the F50 tranny ?? I will have to look into that one again?

maybe a big single turbo vh41, stahl, and custom grind cam? sounds fun to me
How much custom work would you have to do to fit that LSx into the Y33?
I've got one in my S14...so with all the room in the Y33...not too bad. Custom engine/tranny mounts, custom driveshaft, and some basic wiring and voila...you're in business. Now, it's not all THAT simple, but it's not that bad if you can take your time and have a nice place to work.
I've recently picked up a super beater car to use in the rain, etc. so the Q can see some downtime. Also picked up a new LS1 shortblock for the S14. Once the 240 is back on the road, I'll start building a nice big cube LSx engine for it and hopefully pull the LS1 back out of it and put it in the Y33 at some point. However, the 2J idea is very tempting as well.

well let me know when you work out some mounts and such i might be throwin you some money. also you gonna be able to keep the stock auto trans shift gate? 4l80e is like a 400 but with overdrive:)
I imagine it would be pretty easy to keep it and make it look perfectly stock (interior wise), but haven't looked into it and probably won't get to anytime soon. You could always be the guinea pig if you like....haha.
