View Full Version : Subwoofer in my Q....

I put a 12" JL W3 sub in my Q, but its not hitting very hard...

Heres the thing... I pretty much took out me old system out of my integra, and put it into my Q. Same deck, same amp, same sub, same settings, but new wires. So I thought that it would hit just as hard as it did in my integra, which was enough to be anoying when turned up. People told me that its because the Q is a luxury car and has lots of sound insulation, and also a Gas tank between that trunk and the cab. But the other thing i noticed, was that my subwoofer speaker isnt pushing as hard as it used to, even with the same settings. Like when you put your had on it while is bumpin its not moving as much as it used to when it was in my integ. Anyways sorta hard to explain, but maybe someone out there knows what im talking about, hahaahaa. or if anyone has any ideas on whats going on please let me know. thanks! >:(

Maybe your wiring isn't as solid, or the settings on the amp got changed during the switch?

From my understanding you're correct in the fact it's hard to get "good bass" out of a luxury car. Luxury cars were built so the cabin was quiet. So unlike your Integra you're going to have to work harder to get the sound you want to achieve. I know some ppl took down their rear deck and cute some of the wood put so could pass through easier, or you can take down the cover behind the rear armrest, other than that, add more bass, lol.... As for you set-up not kickin as hard as once before, go back and check your wiring. The car shouldn't have anything to do with it not sounding like it once did.

i hear ya bud, my 10-inch audiobahn subwoofer is more for fill, it does not slam or output heart-stopping bass... i have a 150W RMS self-amplifier audiobahn subwoofer station in my trunk. as for the audi, triple-chambered ported box with a digital design 9512 sub, going 1200W RMS monoblock... that shiet slams ultra hard! i love that sub! unblowable!!! mikey

Just in case try facing the sub toward the rear of the vehicle this always sounds better than facing the interior of the vehicle.

my first thought was that the driver could be out of phase, due to wiring (covered in the other's comments) reversed when moving from the previous car, but its obvious that the new car's trunk/interior design is to eliminate road noise. noise that comes from a very close vacinity as where your woofer is housed. the trunk is probably sealed off as much as possible from the cabin, so long as the budget allowed.

can you elaborate on your enclosure design? some kinda hybrid transmission line?

Try this first step... for experimental purposes, remove one of the rear speakers on the rear deck. Then see if that improves your bass at all. what you're essentially doing is now providing air passage between the trunk and cabin. Since the Q's gas tank is in the trunk, the passenger compartment and trunk are very well sealed from each other. If you do notice an improvement, what you can then do is cut a hole, or the whole bottom off the center storage compartment, and use that to vent the trunk into the pass compartment. If you want to retain use of the box, you can build a new floor for it and use mesh to still keep it open... etc...
Oh yah, and don't forget to put that rear speaker back when done!

me too, chopping the back baffle board this weekend.... hopefully i don't break shiet. i'm also gonna try to play with the gain and the subwoofer's port (facing the rear now). will post up feed-back and snap pics.

hey eh lets not take out the fact that you had a hatch which is considered the best for bass knocks and moving to an high insulated car...

you might wanna remove some stuff as stated and go for a ported design also see if you can get the deaden material outta the trunk

Actually i had a 4 door integ, with a trunk... but I once had a civic hatch that super hit hard, becuase of its hatch design. Ive been thinking about going with a ported design... its going to take some trial and error, but i think i will achive what i want somehow.

I tried adjusting the gain the other day... didnt help.

as for the integra was it a 2 door hatch ??? wel if it was there is your problem when a subwoffer is put in a hatchback car it has more airspace then one of a 4 door car because there is no back deck and same goes for suv's

no deal guys, baffle board to hard to get to .... turned up the gain (bass boost) and it made somewhat of a difference..

u turned up your gain or bass boost? both are very different. the gain is there to match the voltage level of the source unit (cd player). if u go higher than the level of the source, youll send a clipped signal to your speakers and damage them. so just be sure youre not just treating your gain like a volume knob because u may be shopping for a new sub real soon.

in my g50 ive tried so many setups and from a 10, a 12, to 2 10s and also 2 12s, but nothing could get sound past the gas tank. My rear window would rattle and the middle of the roof too before i could get ne thing in to the passenger cabin. trunk open or even outside sounded better then in the car...but i finally got a 15" alpine type r and flipped it upside down to use the trunk air space and now it works great..doesnt look too vip, but does the job...

For applications like that downfiring is often the best solution, since it sends the soundwaves directly into the frame which allows for much better bass response where air transfer will diminish the soundwaves. This is most frequently done in convertibles....since when the top is down there is no real way for the soundwaves to propagate through the air without major disturbance. Using a sealed enclosure or small ported set-up will work best.

so a sealed box is better than a bandpass box? i have a sealed, but was thinking about getting a ported box cuz i thought it might be better, but yah... why is one better than the other?
