I am not a mechanic but it sounds like it could be the neutral safety switch. The switch allows the vehicle to start in P or N but will not start in any drive gear. The switch may need replacing or be adjusted.

There should be a switch in your shifter mechanism, or 2 really, one should close when the shifter is in the neutral position, the other for park, most likely your switch for the park position is bad, to test it get everything out of the way and see if when you depress the switch you get continuity through it ( most of them just complete a ground circuit ) . A simple multimeter is all that's needed to test it , if you don't have one its one of the most useful tools you could own, get one . there is an excellent series of write ups on how to use them for anything automotive related on www.autospeed.com ( great tech / diy site btw ) here is a link to the first in the series http://autospeed.com/cms/A_107735/article.html

hope that helps!
