So is the diamond stitch pattern, like the seat insert seen above, prefabbed now where you can just buy it and wrap it, or is the diamond stitch look a "process" you do with the material?
Same with this style?

I know this is sort of a basic question, but I was told you can just buy the leather already done like that now??? Also, if you can, where?

Belleza and Garson are some companies that sell the seat covers with those type of patterns....OR you can get an upholster person to dp that custom for you.

I know they sell that stuff, but I don't really want to just pull something out of a box and put it on. I want a custom look on some parts that those companies do NOT make.
That is why I am asking this question. I already know I can take it to a shop and pay someone to do it...

It's done by hand. Diamond stitching is only on the most ballertastic cars because A) it takes a shitload of time to do it and if you fuck it up you start over, and B) you need a considerable amount of skill to be able to do it correctly. There is a ton of measuring required, look at the maroon seats in that bentley, see how the pattern matches up perfectly? That doesn't just happen. I've been doing interiors for almost a year now and I still have no idea how they did the maserati seats with the buttons. I have a general idea but the time involved would be extreme.

This car is amazing. They only built 100 QPs with this option. Even has sat internet and wireless keyboad. This interior took many hours to craft. But if you look at the seats they are not that complicated. Its a simple outskin with a diamond stitch & tuck center. Any upholstery shop should be able to do a simple stitch & tuck. Takes a buch of time though.
http://image.automobilemag.com/f/reviews/bentley/9508265/0805_06_z+2008_bentley_brooklands+interior_view.jp g
Now this is a little easier, stitching double diamonds. You gotta lay everything out first in chalk like a grid. Then break the grid down into smaller ones. From there you can start to run the lines. I saw the fab guy that stitched my interior do that. He didnt speak english so I couldnt ask him any questions, but it look like it takes a lot of patience.

The diamonds isn't hard it just takes a TON of time. Use up a 1/4" hypoallergenic memory foam between the top fabric and the base you sew it to. That's what makes the diamonds puffy.
I thought the QP was stitch and tuck as well but I was told (by an installer who does the cars for morries maserati) that its more complicated then that because of heated seats or air pocket or some shit like that. stick and tuck is old skool there was a 1967 caddy I wanted sooooooooooo bad that had it in white with white buttons (on a cream car with a white top), too white for me but you could roll down all 4 windows in the sedan and it was pillarless so when you did it was super baller. I think the windows were crank though. Crank windows... made it slightly less baller...
You CAN however by fabric that is prestitched in a quilted pattern. I did my carpet in it and it held up through a whole minnesota winter of snowy nasty boots beating on it. It would look cool in seats but its rather simple and its fabric. Wouldn't get sticky hot in the summer or rock solid cold in the winter like leather/vinyl though.

where can I buy that fabric? I want to do my door inserts and headliner first. I'm a little more hesitant to do anything with the seats since I have the embossed Infiniti anniversary seats

I would not do the headliner in the stitched fabric. It is extremely heavy and will sag after time no matter how much glue/contact cement you use. Joan fabrics sells the pre quilted fabric.

i would second that. i gotta epoxy the velcro tabs back on. the weight slowly pulls it off one by one and i end up having the velcro stuck together and a sagging area. but i do love how thick and soft it is. if i was in an SUV rollover id want this style of upholstery haha.

If you have ~12 hours to burn and a second pair of hands you can strategically tie the pre-stitched diamond fabric to the headliner shell. I did that with my vampire brothel headliner and it turned out fantastic.

quick question, the interior that 909 has, something like that would they just craftely sew the fabric over the existing leather or would they have to do a little cut & sew?
Green Poupon
05-25-2009, 02:32 PM
^ The centers of the seats would be cut out, the purple material would be put over the existing leather then sewed back together. Some people replace the factory insert completely but typically it's kept under the new material as it provides extra support, rigidity and toughness.

The bottom one FOR SURE.
Green Grundel: what do you think of a vinyl headliner? (Vinyl as in fabric, not the 'sticker') You think DAP spary glue and stapled edges on turns would be enough? I got about 6 yards of the one that has felt backing and have been thinking of doing my headliner with that. Originally bought it to do my seats myself (yes i am brave to try new things plus my wife is a seamstress)
Also, i would love to get more info on how to do the buttoned center inserts on seats; i am currently doing my interior and that is exactly what i want.

Short answer no. sticking vinyl to a headliner and having it stick for more then 6 months it difficult. In the old days they used buttons and glue to hold the vinyl to the roof. I did it once but ended up going a different direction. You can buy these kits that you wrap your vinyl/fabric around and press down and it makes you a button with your fabric. Use wire wrapped around a large washer to hold the button to the roof. Use a thin [1/4inch] layer of cotton under it to give it the pillowy effect. You'll need the buttons spread out in a diamond pattern roughly spaced 6" apart. The glue is used only on the backside of the headlight to hold the vinyl against the back of the headliner.
If you are going to do the buttoned center inserts thats super easy. The layer goes:
Top Fabric/Leather/Vinyl
1/4" upholstery foam [it looks light green]
Leather/Vinyl or head duty fabric on the bottom
You stitch your pattern into the seats [like diamonds or whatever] then where ever they intersect you poke a button through and tie it tight so that it holds the vinyl on. There's a button tuck style but I could not possibly explain it on here.
Hope that helps. - Grundel
hmm... a buttoned roof doesn't sound too bad either and I tought of it too... what if I was to do it like the seats but using a thiner pad?
Green Poupon
08-05-2009, 05:38 PM
what do you mean "thinner pad"? Like use the foam on the headliner? You can but it is expensive and heavy. Cotton on the headliner is a much better way of doing it then the foam. Much lighter and easier to work with. Does that make sense?
wow, you are the man! Cotton would work better. I also had the following idea (even though it is rather involved):
-Draw a pattern on the headliner
-Drill small holes (very small ones) to where either the quilted pattern or button the will be fastened to the liner
-Then just technically sew the pattern into the liner and glue the edges
What do you think of this?
When I said thiner pad yes I was referring something thiner like the original liner but cotton would beeasier.

Haha there's no drilling in sewing. It'll tear up anything, I tried once.
Ok this is pretty involved but i'll try and explain it the best I can.
Take the headliner off of the car. Lay it down so the side that faces you in the car is facing up. Test fit the cotton by laying it onto the headliner. Cut along the sides of the headliner where it begins to curve upwards. You are going to need that to be headliner-on-vinyl for this to work right. Spray a coat of 3m headliner adhesive to the headliner and the back of the cotton. Lay it down on the headliner.
Take your vinyl, which can have a pattern stitched on it or can be plain, in all honesty it doesn't NEED a pattern sewn in it because the buttons will create its own pattern. Spray a good coat of the adhesive down the bare sides of the headliner and lay the vinyl down. Don't worry about wrapping it around the sides we'll get to that later.
Here's the fun part, I came up with this idea when I was super baked last year and it saves SO much time... go to home depot... and buy a sheet of pegboard. Then take the pegboard and using a sharpie draw circle holes to create the diamond pattern that will be where the buttons will go. Lay it on top of your headliner and get it as straight as possible.
Using a pokey [I used a leatherworking tool but a tiny screw driver will work fine -do not use anything with a cutting edge like an exacto knife- poke a hole through the headliner/vinyl/cotton in each of the holes your circled. Now your button pattern is poked through the headliner. Remove the pegboard.
Your buttons are going to need to be at least the diameter of a quarter, slightly bigger would be better. You are going to need some wire as well. The back of the button will have a loop. You do not want to use 4 hole buttons unless you are going to be stitching them into the headliner which is hard to do and have it come out even.
Weave the wire through the back of the button and then weave both ends through the hole in the headliner. Should look like this:
O <--- Button
||
|| <--- Wire
||
X <--- Hole in headliner
|| <--- Wire
Pull it all the way through. I used small washers because they are lightweight. Weave the wire through a washer and pull tight so that the button pulls the vinyl against the cotton and headliner [as this will create the pillowy pattern] and twist the wire around the washer like a twisty tie. Keep doing that until all the holes are buttoned. If you can't get the vinyl to stretch over the contours of where the sunvisors go use a hairdyer [preferably heat gun] and it'll stretch. I have wrapped things that I thought impossible with the help of a heatgun.
And there you have it! If you have any other questions let me know.
YAY! Just what I tought!!!! So awesome! Thanks Sam! I will definetly post pics of the outcome! I also have an idea about the edge of the moonroof and the sunvisors:
Do some kind of pattern around it... shit, i cant explain it but just watch!
SikNLow
08-07-2009, 01:19 PM
green grundel you've got pm!
So I bought all the material and actually it was easier to figure out the pattern in the actual liner than using the peg board: the peg board limits your design pattern to the size and distance of the holes; because I am using buttons that are about the size of a quarter the pattern was too 'close' and I was using too many buttons.
I figured the center from the rear side of the liner and 5 inches in then used a string and a tape measure to mark where the holes will be every 12 inches creating a diamond pattern.
Pics comming soon!

As others have stated, diamonds take a long time to stitch correcty, but look hella baller when done. I have done these a few times for customers and everyone loves them!!!
If you are putting buttons in, use a long tufting needle to pull your strings through once they are tied to the buttons. You can tie them off on the back of a headliner board or inside the seat. Tie them around a piece of cut coathanger, cotton batting or anything that is somewhat solid and will hold tention. This is the same way we do biscuit tuck interiors!!
