View Full Version : Driving long distances on stretched/cambered wheel setups?

I'm going to go and visit my parents this weekend (7hr drive) and i am keen to take my Cedric to show off my new wheels etc. But i am still nervous about driving on wheels that are so stretched and cambered!:
18x9 w/ 215/35R18 Kumho Ecsta's and 2 degrees camber
18x10 w/ 225/40R18 Kumho Ecsta's and 6.5 degrees camber

Anyway, i just wanted to know if the long driving stints and ensuing heat in the tyres etc will be a danger. The rear tyre is more stretched than i had expected, given the mild stretch on the front, but still went on without much trouble (he just inflated the wheels and they popped on themselves)

Anyone have experience with this?

I think you will be fine. Just avoid any pot holes as usual. I've done a couple of long drives without any troubles. 2.5 hrs each way. Its just more kms on the tires though so they will wear quicker :(

I would put my spare 350z wheels on for a really long drive though.

The blowout is exactly what i am worried about. The wear isnt so much of a problem as you said, and my new motto is: "Tyres are cheaper than petrol"

I think i will put the rears in the boot for this trip. I'm sure my gf will hate it (she hated having a subwoofer box in the boot before, now the wheels will take up even more room!

The fronts arent so cambered or stretched, although the load rating is kinda low (i am regretting my decision to run 35 profile tyres now, i should have gone with the 40...

ive driven back and forth between norcal and socal (330 miles, one way) several times with...

18x9 215/35/18 -5 degrees camber and
18x10 235/35/18 -3.5 degrees camber

no problems. but this is also NOT a guarantee that you won't have any.

I think that my nervousness will reside the longer i drive on this setup, because right now i avoid anything that isn't perfectly smooth.

But i take it the heat etc from driving doesn't do anything to it?

I should have pointed out that 400km of the road i am taking is somewhat sketchy, 2 lane highway with no runoff etc to swerve to if there is a pothole. Its usually fine other than the fact that it gets bumpy, but there has been times when there are large potholes etc.

I have actually decided that its not worth taking the wheels this time to 'show off'. Its a long weekend (public holiday Monday), so pretty much every 5th car i will see on the road will be a Highway patrol car. And I can guarantee i will be pulled over at least once for a random breath test or vehicle inspection. Last thing i need is for a grumpy cop to decide my car is unroadworthy and tell me it must be TOWED (their perogative - if they feel the 'poke' or camber is dangerous they wont let me drive it away).
That’s not *so* bad if I am in Sydney, close to home, but if I am 250km from home in some hick town and get told to get it towed I wouldn’t be happy! LOL

I've driven long distances on my setup, and yesterday went on a long drive (70 miles there), did a few hard runs trhough the mountains with a lot of twisty roads and the tires are fine...I'd say put your old wheels on the rear and drive like that...once you are more comfortable about your setup, then you can leave them on at all times.

Well, wish me luck. I have the stock wheels on the rear and the 18x9s on the front. About to leave for my little drive!

I just drove from NorCal to SoCal (SD) this weekend. My tires had been rotated because I was running heavy camber, I'm not a baller like most the people on this board, so I was driving down on belts. You'll be fine, just bring a spare with you if you're REALLY that worried.

I ended up using my spare, but that's due to neglect. If you're aware of your problems, and you prepare for them, it won't be that big of a deal.

I'm running 16x8-15 wheels on my car, with about -4 or so, I believe.

Yep, well i just arrived... Nothing much to report other than it was a more bumpy ride than i was used to :)

Will change the rears back on tomorrow morning...

so what did you parents think of your new ride [with the wheels installed, of course]?

Haha, its always difficult to impress my parents with my car...
BUT i think i succeeded. My dad said "the wheels are a bit bigger than i prefer, but they look amazing". He was slightly unimpressed by the bumpy ride though* :-\
I got a great pic of my 4yr old nephew sitting inside the rear dish :)

It seems to be impressing the town-folk too. There's a carshow in town so lots of car nuts around. People literally stopping their car to stare at me, and the minute i park the car there are people walking around it to try to figure out what it is. Maybe I should enter the show?* 8)

Will take some better pics this weekend with some better backgrounds etc. Hopefully i can capture the camber better!

Did the tyres you had put the rear rims 225/40 on an 18x10 sorta stretch a bit more when you put the car's weight on them??? I really wanna go for the super stretch idea see pic below, sorry to hijack your thread but do you have any idea on what profile/rim width this would be close to?? I look forward to seeing more pics of your car dude, looks sweet.

tires stretch more when you put the cars weight on them?? first I have heard of this

Dominik

I'm guessing you mean that as weight is put on them, in a cambered setup, the inner sidewall will get more pressure, and possibly go on even more of an angle.... And i am not sure. But it hasnt popped so far, so it must be alright!
That UCF20 is probably running 19s with modified rear arches. Cant tell you the width, but they all seem to be either 10-10.5 in the rear. Fronts are usually 9. There are other threads about 19s and strething so i dont know what tyre you would want for them, but it would be a 35 profile to maintain the same rolling diameter

I just mean the bead of the tyre, does the weight of the car sorta flaten out the tyre on the rim??

as long as you have decent tread (esp. on the inside of the tires) you should be fine.
OoOO ya and make sure your not rubbing anywhere .. Ive done a few long distance drives on stretched / camber'd tires

Well 7hrs was counting on the fact that i would encounter traffic. But it wasnt very bad so it only took 6 1/2hrs. I'm back now, and there were no dramas..

Changing the wheels over was like a 30 minute job, so i dont mind doing it. I can still take a fair bit of luggage in the boot with the rear wheels in there so this will be my M.O. from now on :)

Not sure if this will help you but I drove for 22 hours in a 30 hour period, 10 hours going and 12 on the way back on 245/35/20 on 10' rear wheels and 225/35/20 on a 8.5' the fronts. No problems just had to put alittle air in one of them before I drove back. I dont run chamber though and im only dropped an inch

I wanted to revive this thread because, the guy has a 18x10 with a 225/40, but how about a 215/40?

i would do trips from los angeles to san jose regularly with the Q, with 225/40 on an 18x10 and 255/35 on an 18x11.5 or 12 (switched wheel setups), with between -4 and -5.5* camber front and -7 and -9* rear, and i had no issues. yatta! just make sure your tire pressures are good and you have adequate tread on the sidewall :P

The 10mm less will make it instantly explode...lol

I've driven pretty long distances (3-4hrs one way) on a 235 but with -8 degrees in the back. No real issues.
