View Full Version : How do you have your airride mounted?

I'm trying to get some ideas for an airride setup (the time has finally come to those of you who know me, i'm retiring the coilovers!!!)

I want to know and see how people are mounting their tanks, compressors, etc etc....I was thinking about running 2 compressors to a 5 gallon tank in the car (xB), but i'm just weary about the noise it'll make, also i'm weary about putting them under the car (just b/c thats about 450 dollars worth of stuff just chillin under my car), so i'm going to have to sacrifice somewhere... :(

Please post up some pics? I've tried googling, but all that seems to come up are mini trucks and semi trucks :tickedoff:

-Thanks

Toyxbox has his under the rear of his car. His box should be on the site somewhere.

If you do some type of box which was dynamat..you could hace a really nice VIP setup...and have little or no noice inside...

Also the cleaness of the box would make of your setup one of a kind...

I know you guys like doing things right.....

I have mine in the spare tire well, with the tire and the covers on, you can barely hear the compressor on.

Ah nice to hear you're steppin it up again Wayne! :D If I were you, Id take out the spare, and put it inside in that location like most people are mentioning. As long as you opt up instead of doing a bargain basment compressor setup, you can get some that are REALLY damn quiet. If its still too loud, you can make an MDF enclosure for it, and dynamat that till its silent. Personally, Ive never heard one that was too loud, as long as its tucked in the back nicely and not right behind the driver. (not really gonna happen on an xB anyway). Do you not like the way Chris' and Jeremys setups are or somethin? Dave Moulton has a sick ass setup, but no offense to him, its a show car and babied queen. Its not a daily driver, its a pampered show vehicle that can afford to have his chromed pieces tucked up underneath his car. Id keep it inside if it were me personally. Cant wait to see it man! Gonna be sick! 8)

originally my plan was i was going to have a flat sub enclosure facing straight up and then a railing system above it holding the compressors and the tank...but like say, the noise is going to kill me!!!! jeremy and chris's is nice and all, i just have reservations about tucking that much money under my car =(...i'm actually thinking now about doing the whole compressors in the wheel well idea......and ya'll have never had a problem with overheating? that was one of my concerns with hiding them like that, but contrary to rumor, the xB trunk space isn't that large, so i may have to show the tank with the setup as well...but heres my plan as of right now

-2 380 viair compressors with pressure switch and water tap
-5 gallon tank (plenty of play time for the xB)
-8 valve system (just hooked up to FB setup but independent valves for air in and out for each corner) but still up in the air about the valves...Van has suggested rocket valves, but can't find any reviews on them, and most of my buddies are running SMC, and I've heard some horror stories about parker (locking open and closed)
-Keeping my HKS short stroke coilover rear shocks with firestone or slam specialties bags in the rear
-The front is still up in the air, easy street is the only real option right now for us, but there may be more soon =X
-3/8 line all the way though
-Custom 2 or 3 switch setup, but don't know what kind of gauges running yet (front up and down, back up and down and pancake just for kicks)

Now I've been researching air ride for sometime now (almost a year to be exact), and i've kept switching back and forth between air and coils and have finally decided air would be the best setup for what i'm going for with the kit (its a +2k dollar kit, and i'd hate to just bash it into something that could have been avoided with air)...so I know a bit, but am far from a master, so any opinions would be EXTREMELY appreciated!

-Thanks to all who have posted so far ;)

hey..my friend has 2) 2 gallon tanks located in the spare tire area w/ the compressor underneath the car, and it is already a little too loud for my taste...he of course has a viair 400 which is a lot louder than the 380...maybe u should look into 2 2 gallon tanks if u dont wanna show ur tank..maybe pick up an air zenith compressor..one of these would be a little less powerfull than the viair 380's but they are rebuildable, and have been gaining popularity lately...as far as valves, have u looked into the airridetechnologies big red valves?? it comes in a block and is a lot easier to install..especially on a car where it is hard to mount the valves..if not, dakotadigital sells an electric kit which reads the air electrically so you don't have to run that extra airline to the guages..plus it comes w/ a nice digital guage...as far as the easystreet kit, make sure u buy front camber plates..the easy street kit gives the car positive camber and the camber plates bring it back to about 0 degrees..if u got the money, go w/ airrunner!

i thought about the dakota digital....but its money it seems, and i'm just a poor little white boy :-[

right now on my hks coilovers, i'm running cuscom camber plates as well as camber bolts (long story, but they didn't work on the compact c coilovers without modifications), so i have those as well, and i've seen what the easy streets do to a car, but "i'mbox"'s car out like 3 or 4 degrees it looked like :o

the airrunner is nice, don't get me wrong, but number 1...money...number 2, i'm pretty sure i could build a system as reliable and nice if not nicer and more reliable (ouch, my head hurts) then the airrunner kit

and i've actually looked into the air zenith compressors, they're nice and a little more expensive, my only thing now is viair has been the standard for a while, and i've never heard any problems out of them for years, air zenith hasn't been around for too long (to my knowlege), so i'm not sure how it works long term as of yet, but i'm deff. keeping my eyes on the air zenith.

and I may have to look into the two gallon tanks, another idea i had was a pancake in the spare wheel well when i gut all of that stuff out....but only time will tell on that matter ;)

one of the 380's would be sufficient for the xb. ig you're going to make a box type enclosure for the compressor be sure to have a fresh air line into it for the filter and a way for it vent otherwise youll get overheating like a bastard

oh yes, if i build a box, i've planned on running computer fans to it, one intake, one exuast fan.....just need to take a look at what i'm working with and fnid a hidden way to exhuast it out

Typically we put one 5 gallon alum. tank under the rear with the 380's. i would strongly suggest against the Air Zenith because of thier amp draw. Viair does also offer rebuild parts for there pumps.

Another option for you is to run our aero sport bags over your coilovers for the ultimate control.

only problem is i could probably only fit a 3 gallon under the box, i know people have tried with the five gallon, but i believe it was just too big to fit on any point down there* :-[

as for your aero sport bags, they look like a really good concept that would work in the front, but the rear is a sperate shock/spring combo on a solid fixed axle, so thats why i'm keeping my rear shocks and just running a bag in the rear, in the front, like say, i'm hoping for somthing in the works soon, but keeping my mouth shut till i hear more news on it* :-X.....but i don't really want to keep my front struts anymore honestly b/c of the lack of camber control i have with the new hks struts, also found someone who wants to by my coils once i go air, so thats money for me*...however, if the one option falls through, i may look into that aero sport bag, just need to find some good performance short stroke struts for the front to put those bags on

and yes, i've heard really the only con about the AZ is the amp draw, but dont' know much else about them...so i'm probably going to stick with the viair just for the fact that once again, its seemed to be the industry standard for a long time now, same with the firestone bags...

now i also just noticed the price of the dakota 4 corner plus tank controller, that may be another option for me, not as expensive as i had believed it to me......::edit:: just read the sending unit details::edit::...still not as pricey as i had thought it was...hmmmmm :-X

i'm not a fan of air zenith. All we use here is Viair. we've bagged over 50 vehicles and Viair has been the consistent best
