View Full Version : Newer V8 Swap Options for Y33 Q45??

Anyone know if it's possible (or if it's already been done) to swap a newer V8 into a Y33 Q45, like say the 4.5L from a 03-04 M45, or even the big boy 5.6L from the Titan/Armada? Would be nice to have a little more power than the stock 266 hp/278 ft-lbs. I'm curious what electrical challenges would be involved (which I'm assuming to be the most difficult part of the swap).

anythings possible..but why would you go through the trouble??

possible... yes. But additional costs and downtime and headaches involved far outweigh the cost of just upgrading your existing motor. Get an intake, custom headers, exhaust, and an ECU tune and you will probably more than happy for a while. For a little more fun, just add some NOS

also think about the additional weight this is going to add to the front end of the car...it will dramatically decrease handling abilities. Why not do a twin turbo or SC setup on your existing motor. Or better yet do an RB25 or RB26 into that succer.

or 3sgte or 22rte... fully built.

Yea anything as far as swaps go its just easier to drop a jdm motor in then go from there or go f/i.
To do such a swap the downtime and mantience costs issues will prob run more then the car.
So in the end my suggestion would to either do the basic bolt ons and* be happy with it or work on the engine more and go custom with
turbo or nos either or will dramatically increase power but what do i know i think stock power is a lil more then enough... ;)

Are there any ECU upgrades available for the y33? I know they have them for G50s

you should send jwt a email if you curious.
and these companies too.. turboxs, sp-engineering, greddy, blitz, g-dimension, etc.
im sure they can do it at a right price.

with the amount of cutting and welding involved to probably do this..why would you need a vip car to go that fast??? just to know?..little hop ups available can get you a little more juice outta the stock piece...and still be lethal on the streets...unless you go heads up daily with exact same cars..the q can destroy about anything thats imported and can hang with some of the domesticated animals out there too..

Hmm interesting thread. if anything i would want a Manual conversion in the car. I love Big body drifting. and would like to do a manual conversion or motor swap in one I want to get a Q45.. but would almost go through the trouble of importing a track only chaser. anyone have any info?? I saw a Y33 with a 26 in it a long time ago... but not sure if it was in a mag or online
I know there is a guy with the 94 Q45 with a 25 in it he drifts. but he had to cut the fire wall back to make it fit. but i dont remember seeing that on any other of that car with that motor in it. Personal preffrance? maybe... I am just trying to weigh my options and hope some people can help me out!!
Thanks!

ECU and BCM are the least of your worries. Getting the damned thing to fit just right would be your first hurdle.
Well, there's no guarantee that the motor mounts would be the same. You'd also need a custom bell housing and possibly have to mod the entire driveline as well. The external dimensions of the motor could be different, which would req. a completely custom bell housing, possibly fabricating a custom driveshaft etc.
Honestly, you'd spend less money custom fabbing a single turbo, even a rear mount like the ones that STS sells. And an engine swap really won't net you that much more power. If you want engine swap power, go with bolt-ons. You'll get the same result.

Some may not like this idea..but for price and aftermarket support...LS1 can't be beat. Personally I'm in the process of swapping an RB into my G50 since the VH decided to seize itself for no apparent reason...but that's just because I miss the sound of an RB at my house. Several of my friends have swapped LS1's into all sort of chassis...from S13 to FD3S.

Ah. Now you see, GenIII and GenIV SBC's are amazing motors. That, well, I can def. condone that swap simply for the possibilities of power.

What do you mean insight? You can put any motor and trans in almost anything. I'm putting an RB into my G50 right now..so why couldn't you do it in a Y33? If you're looking for some simple solution that doesn't require modification...well, it doesn't exist.

If you were to see my car.. you would know the hard modification is just a foot hill in knowledge to become a better tuner. no i am not talkin about club lexus people who think the hardest most complitacted thing to do is throw a 98 soarer 1jz into a 92 soarer. Or the famous update swap.
Inisight may not have been the best word described for what i am wanting to view. I have seen it done, but since the site lacks fsms for much of the cars on this foum there is no real way to tell what cross refs. with what. But it may have been the right word, but since no one has done it.. I cant ask what to expect?
I dont want to waste my time taking my clip apart when the cross member is the same as a skyline. I like to research my possibilities before I go and waste money on a project. like why is the guy with the 94 q45 cut his firewall back, when the Q45s i have seen in dori ten mags have not? I know that the Y33 shares the same things as R33s and S14s. Since they are all apart of that same year running. I am just looking for some info.

Wow titan motor in the y33 is not a direct bolt on... but like everyone said anything is possible with the right amount of $$ spent... good luck wth ur descion.

It all depends on why you are swapping it. Budget will make the biggest diffenrce on what you do. I have thought about the titan motor as a swap into the y33 and also the idea of forced induction. For the money spent the forced induction would make more power and it sure would be very fun.

I guess the only positive part is the vk45 is lighter than the vh41 in our y33 so weight wouldnt be much of an issue but engine height probably will be an issue. The y33 is a lower car than the newer f50 (appears that way)
as for the vk56 I'm sure the head is much taller as its designed for trucks without hood height limitations so I wouldnt be sure if it fits.

Anything is possible.
But if your going to upgrade engines, why not do somthing with more power and less weight? Like a RB26? LS1? Somthing sporty but at the same time keeping the smooth revs and tune of the VH41.
Even make it a 5speed!!

Hmm build a VH-VK to make about 450hp+
Buy a junkyard VK45 for 650
New pistons for 62 a piece from the dealer $376
Thinner headgaskets from commetic $500
Shave the head lightly $100
Port and polish the head $800 per head
Larger valves $800
Stiffer valve springs $650
Cams reground to offer a little bit more top end $1200
Some arp L19 headstuds and torque those suckers down. $1000
Higher stall torque converter $750
Radiator $400
Fans $250
Clean and shave the bay and eliminate unnecessary vacuum lines and VSVs $Free
Then create a set of custom headers $1400
Custom set of ITBs with $1500
Don't forget to portmatch the manifolds. $300
Break it in properly using the motoman method (lots of oilchanges). $200
Crank up the injector size by about 10% $500
PowerHouseRacing MAPECU2 fuel and timing control. $900
Then spend some time on the dyno making it drive nice and smooth but good top end power coupled with V8 downlow powah!!! $700-100
That should do it for a full VK45 build up
That is about $14K+
Go for the LS swap its cheaper and for that kind of power you can do that with cams and a set of headers.
I think it would be a cool car to have a G50 with LS motor. Plus the 13K can turn that into 750HP (LS6+ Cams, Header, Procharger and some Spray and tune) motor all day reliably and still get you great gas mileage
Good luck

or just get the JDM 3.0L V6 Turbo (VQ30DET) motor from the Grand Turismo Edition Y33 Cima. Should be a direct drop in

If you live in an area that has emissions testing, I'm wondering how you are going pass that.
Here in BC on late model cars with OBD2 they check if you have any codes. Older cars they run the dyno. Having taken apart a VK45 motor and talked to guys that have VH45's, I would not put a VK in a car equipped with a VH. The VH are a better and stronger motor overall. I have gone over the FSM of the G50, Y33, Y34 and F50. The VH and the VK 45's weigh nearly the same and therefore are a bit lighter than the RB26 and VG30. For what it costs to get a VK in the Y33, I would go with a custom turbo setup as well. There are a few people that have or are in the process of doing so.

The VG30DETT weights 610lbs, about 100lb more than the VH45. And from what everyone has said, the RB26 is an enormous motor. Cutting the firewall and moving the engine back makes the car more of a Front mid-mounted engine with better weight distribution, so I can see that modifying the firewall for an inline-6 is easier than for a wider V6 or V8. Could be more like expanding the transmission tunnel.

Isn't the VQ motor the motor they run in Formula 1 ( as a renault of course)??? I forget which motor is the one they run but which ever one it is, I have been told that it is an "overbuilt" motor for a street car and would seem to be a good start for a y33 as long as you don't have some rediculous HP goals etc.....???
