View Full Version : y31 gloria suspension options
hi all
my brother was pretty lucky to find a factory condition y31 88 gloria .. badges say brougham VIP 3.0 turbo
i think the engine is a vg30et but it has some weird electric turbo with turbozet written on it.. i think it was put in by previous owner to save gas since he was a mechanic.
but i was wondering what options he has in terms of lowering suspension like adjustables
and if adjustables from more popular nissans might fit in?
or anything a new y31 owner should know?
:police: police pulled us over the other day and he thought the gloria was a mercedez :2funny:

Congrats on the find, they are a nice car. The turbozet is an aftermarket doozit that is supposed to improve performance and fuel economy, but as with most things like this the jury is out on it and most people think its a crock of s***
Anyway, since its a Brougham, top of the line, i suspect it has factory air suspension (are there a high/norm/sport buttons next to the centre aircon vent?). In which case you have 3 options:
1. Adjust the factory height sensor rods, to trick the computer in to lowering the car
2. Get an aftermarket height controller. The guy i sold my Cima to (JUDGE) has a spare one of these and they are very funky
3. Get coilovers (is that what you mean by 'adjustables'?)
1 & 2 are the cheapest option, but only if the car has air suspension. And speaking from personal experience, the Y31 air suspension has a tendency to pop when lowered and raised too much; which can leave your car stranded on the side of the road while you commence a 6 month search for a replacement air strut. Not that i'd want to discourage you or anything ;)
Coilovers are what i ended up with after 1yr of trouble with airsus. As for compatibility, the strut tops are apparently the same as the R31 skyline, although the caliper brackets may be different and there might be a bit of customisation involved as most R31s are 4-stud. Rears are similar to alot of other nissans apparently, although the strut tops are unique again.
But your best bet is to order from Japan as i did. budget anywhere up to $1000 for good quality secondhand (often alot cheaper though).
There is a couple of Y31 owners on this forum, i will let them give you any more advice
thanks
this one doesnt have factory airbags
the rears seem to be a seperate strut and spring

Hmmm... Is it a wagon?
I was certain all Y31s had similar suspension setups.
Ok, in that case i'm not really sure! Do you think it might be possible to fit a coilover where the shock is, and just remove the spring?
