:signdammit::signdammit::signdammit:So after getting my window scratched the hell out of by some AAA dude getting my keys out... Comming back from class i noticed that the battery light and brake light went on. I just got a new battery so i know it wasnt that so i decided to check if it was my alternator. Started the engine...popped the hood.... disconnected the negative terminal and the engine when off.... im pretty sure its the alternator..
i can get the part easily but is it a DIY job or should i bring it in the shop? How much would it be? its a 1997 q45 Also would my leaking valve cover gasket would ever seep into the alternator or could this even happen??
thanks for the help i need this fixed asap..school is a bitch.

LOL! I had those same problems
It's a DIY fix.
Go to kragen, I forget how much I paid for my alternator but they offer a lifetime warrenty on it.
And my valve gasket leak did leak oil on to the alternator
Valve gasket leaks are also DIY fixes
The dealer charges sumthin like a couple hunny for the fix of the gasket
If you have to take it to a shop, then go to auto fashion, they should be able to help you out

alternator is pretty simple to change out, the valve cover gaskets a lil more time consuming but a diy job if you are mechanically inclined

ill probably due the alternator myself but the valve cover Idk.. hopefully autofashion does it cheaper than the $500 quote i got from all import service which is the best and affordable place that i know of.
How long do you estimate replacing the alternator?

I'd say 1 hr - 1 1/2 hr to change the alt out

I'd like to see someone do this job in 1 hour. I've been wrenching on cars over 20 years and it took me 2 hours. Anyhow, I changed the alt 2x during my 6 years of Q ownership. It's the only part that doesn't seem to hold up and I went with OEM both times.

i can do it in an hour. =) only because i had to take it out 3 times that week since i kept getting faulty alternators. so the last time i installed it, it probably took 45 minutes...

Me too! I couldn't figure out what the deal was or how to keep it from falling off. I ended up using 3M 90 spray adhesive. Worked well.

I doubt they would be able to do this, but I could be wrong. More than likely there's an alternator shop in your area. They can possibly rewind the alternator to produce more amperage. However, i'd recommend contacting DC Power or Mechman in regards to a high output alternator. I've been into car audio for a while and both manufacturers appear to have great product.

I recently got a new double din deck and 2 12inch subs in my car. Is this the reason why my alternator died?

the 12s could help drain your alternator faster but mostlikely
it was old and the valve gasket leak giving it an oil bath
