Hey
so i was looking thru cardomin a while ago and found a jzs147 aristo in japan with 3 12" subs on the rear deck under the back window
and recently looking at one of my sites for work about a factory sub on the GS's form 93 to 97 on the rear deck under the rear window
so has anyone else put a different sub there?
i was thinking of putting a 10inch 800watt sub in there in a .8cubic inch box, just woundering if thats a good idea? or has anyone else done anything like this before?

I had 2 JL audio subs on my back deck of my Mustang. Along with a port in the middle. I think the audio shop called it 3rd band pass or something. They just built the box portion below it, behind the seat, and mounted the ams underneath it with neon.
The only bad thing is, everyone can see it. That's how it got stolen. :(

that's the number one reason that i tint my windows, so no one can see in.

looks like it will be a little loud but a sweet idea, i'd just do one 10" or maybe 2 10"s

the enclosure for the sub is hidden behind that amp??
Im pretty sure he's running free air....and it doesn't sound too good.

if u were a smart man, youd get yourself a 15 or a pair of 12s and run them infinite baffle style or "free air" as people like to call it. its easy and the best for keeping your trunk functional. NOT ALL SUBS CAN BE USED IB!!! chances are if youve heard an IB setup and it didnt sound good, there was either installer error or a bad choice in subs for this application. the reason id stay away from a 10 is the limited excursion and low end extension youd achieve unlike what youd get from a 15 or a pair of 12s.
think of the entire trunk acting as a giant box for this setup which is why you need to seal off the trunk entirely from the cabin. you get tremendous amounts of low end extension and clarity and dont need monstrous amounts of power to achieve this. believe me when i say when u hear a properly done IB setup, youll want one.
subs off the top of my head that are well suited for an IB install, there are many more but here u go...
Image Dynamics IDQ or IDMAX series
Dayton HO (high output) or Titanic (Both very nice on the wallet)
Soundsplinter RL-p (im using 4 15" versions of these for a basement IB setup)
Fi subs
Adire Shiva, Tempest, Brahma nearly all of Adires subs
If you do an IB install, the baffle and everything in your trunk must be sealed or else it will not sound good. It will be like a box with a bunch of leaks. If you want to save space go with any one of the subs that Pseudonym listed in a small sealed box (<1.0)with a good amount of power. Daytons are really good for the price if you on a budget.

Ive tried alot of different setups in the GS. Ive finally settled down with 1 10" sub in a box in the trunk. 1400 max at 2 ohms and 700 RMS. The amp I have is by the same company and supplys enough power...2000 watts max at 1.3 ohms and 1400 at 2 ohms. I never have the gain on the amp more than 75%, Ive gone through 2 different subs because the voice coils were goin out.
Ive tried the free air with the 10 in the stock spot, it didnt work too well. There was ALOT of rattling, couldnt turn the volume up, so I ditched it. The problem with the 1st Gen is the gas tank being in the trunk, it really limits what we can do, and there is a pretty thick piece of metal betweeen the seats and the trunk, so air only gets in through the stock subs hole, so you have to remove it.

just by reading that post i can bet that u went through those other subs cuz ur thinking your gain knob is a volume knob. doing that sends a clipped signal and will fry your voice coils. when u install your subs, u need to set you gains and forget them.
im not sure if youre running a stock head unit or an aftermarket one but the way u set your gains properly is turn your radio up 3/4 of the way up (nearly full blast). thats usually around the point where if u go any further, your radio will send a clipped signal. then u put on a track of a test tone playing around 150- 200 hz. u pick a frequency that high so it wont damage your sub. you can go here (http://marchandelec.com/sweeps.html) to find the appropriate frequencys. now, u start with your gains at the very minimum and slowly turn them up until you hear distortion from the sub or it becomes unbearably loud. then you back it off a little just ot be on the safe side.
o, and if u have any bass knobs or anything like that, make sure its set to max before u do all this otherwise when u crank it up, youll likely be sending the sub a clipped signal.
now after all is said and done, u can turn your radio back down to an appropriate level and enjoy knowing your subs wont fry when u crank them up. u do the same with your mids and tweeters as well, though there are a few more steps involved.

hi if i where you i would try to build a proted enclosure remove the stock 10" sub from the board and run the port directly into that hole ,
byw look at the pic he ripped out the original h.u and slammed in the new one without making it fit and with no finish
there are premade frames on the web for the gs/aristo
i'm gonna remove all the original ice on mine and run a double din toutch screen form alpine in the front make a fiberglass frame so it fits perfectly'
run new wires all over and than make a custom install in the back
the pic you show me is looking noobish .
imagine cuting those holes in the iron plate there ...and don't forget your gass tank behing the seat , than dou you think it looks nice seeing subs on the rear deck???
looks so cheap and it's an invitation to break the rear window and steal them...

its real easy to build a grill that would cover the subs to keep outside eyes from seeing them.

its real easy to build a grill that would cover the subs to keep outside eyes from seeing them.
but than you still have the problem of the petroltank being underneith the subs so they wil use the trunk as enclosure (free air)
if you where be able to make a enclorure beneith that it would work but that maybe possible with some effort but still seems a real lot of work and in a weird place when if you would go bandpass and run the port into the hole where the stock sub is it would be easyer...
only the idea of going to cut holes there seems strange to me :)
btw that car has no leather i thought all gs and aristo's have leather interiours , but i was wrong it seems ????

I had my first gen gs for almost 6 years and in that time I had tried many different systems and only found one way to get the proper sound into the car.. I tried ported boxes, 2-12's , 3-10's with 600 to 1000 (real) watts and all I got was alot of trunk rattle and muffled bass. The final solution was 1-12" in the factory rear deck with a 1.25 ft enclosure made of fiberglass that molded to the shape of the gas tank that sat underneath it.This 1-12 made more clear bass with only 200 watts running through it than all of my other systems in the car previously. Now if you want decent sound and not all the work just remove the factory 10" and the template it sits in and just drop in a free-air 12" woofer with 150-250 watts and it will sound good.It wont set off alarms but it will sound good. The picture above has the woofers siting on the rear deck and it has an enclosure underneath.10" woofers can play relatively well in a small enclosure if you them give alot of power.Just remember that once you start to add alot bass the mids and highs are going to need to upgraded aswell, but thats another topic..

This is an old thread but after reading it I felt compelled to put in my 2 cents LOL.
The 93-97 GS rear deck has a factory woofer that sits off-center. A friend has a 12" RE SE in a ported enclosure that required the loss/modified placement of center seat belt mechanism in order for it to fit. If you don't care about it then that setup should work just fine. Another buddy has a JL 12W6 in a sealed enclosure...again he had to lose the center seat belt.
I own a 93 LS400 with a free air DLS OA10 sub in the factory location. I don't know much about the 1st GS's but I guess they have a gas tank in the trunk like my LS400 does. Its not hard to mount the sub from underneath if you know how to build the wooden spacers with the angles needed for the sub to clear the gas tank.

I wonder what the passangers in the back would say with 3 12's by their head....nice idea though.
