I liked the Q but I got Very very bored with it after 3 years. It lacked character and power.
I'm a decent mechanic. They are actually very primitive technology aside from the computer in wich I have a mechanic with all the software for it and he works cheap.
PANCAKES!

i like it, if you plan on going the vip style route it will be nice to see something that strays away from the normal platforms. You know the drill slam it with a good stance and your doing just great.

the Q was reliable as hell. Started everytime. Not one issue in 200k miles.
The 7 is definatly more of a drivers car though. I plan on retrofiting with angel eyes, newer rear tails. Wheels are already 19's with serious lip so they are staying.

Nice 7. It does need to be lowered. Maintenance and parts are expensive, sometimes you may have to wait for a part to come in from Germany. I believe you might need special tools to work on this car and will have to get used to resetting various computers throughout the car. Good luck with this car. Any theme yet Brabus or Hamann?? I considered going with a Benz and Bimmer at one time, just didn't have the balls to make the jump, hearing about these issues and what not. I have always believed and trusted Japanese reliability.

Everybody freaks out because of something they heard about bimmers, they are just as reliable and easy to work on as any other car. All you need is a little common sense and the right resources. They are great cars, I wouldn't give up my E34 for anything. And with the right touch they can be very VIP.
Q_ship does yours have the V-12?

Thing is I don't have german resources. But I do think highly of German engineering, there something to be said about a car that was meant to be driven on the Autobahn and Nuburgring at high speeds and still have excellent handling.

German engineering is great but takes some getting used to. I myself was a dedicated japanese car guy, but now I have respect for both as they have thier own ways of building a good car. You would have to struggle to find a BMW that doesn't handle well, though I can't speak for the X5
One doesn't need resources in Germany to get German parts either. There are a handful of parts suppliers in this country that sell original parts for very affordable prices and shipping usually doesn't take very long. For example I work on Porsches for a living at ImagineAuto and we get all of our OEM and most of our aftermarket parts through a company called WorldPac that happens to be in the same business complex as our shop. If we order a part in the morning it will be there by noon.
hmmm....as for parts, ever consider euro wreckers(those shops that hold all those wrecked euro cars), they're pretty cheap some of the parts, don't know in the US have 'em, but we have 'em here in Australia. U could possibly find any parts (2nd hand or brand new) you need in their store.

Mine has the 4.4 V8.
My old man has had these 7's for years. parts are easy to find. It's not a spaceship guys. It's just a BMW. Plenty of them over here now. The technology is actually quite primitive and easy to work on.

ive always wanted to VIPstyle that gen 7series. The asses are so sexy and gangster looking, especially w/ the red/clear tails. They def need a different front and be super low to pull it off tho...

damn. nice wheels n whip! but like the majority of the board says those 7's are generally trouble. the 2 people i know that daily drive 7's have a 740i and a 740iL. they spend about 5 grand a year on repairs. the 740iL is a 97 with about 80k now and was purchased for 16 i think about 2 years ago. he spent almost 10 in just repairs(MAJOR electrical,trans,3 of 4 corners of suspension went so he replaced all 4) the list goes on.
for 25 grand(not including mods he did) he could have just got a more reliable car. hopefully you save on dealership costs cause it appears that my friends cars are in the shop almost as often as my jaguar!
p.s. q45 is lacking a little flair and pizazz but it makes up for it in quality. why didnt you just upgrade the motor or exterior/interior to your liking? sounds like u had a y33 or earlier model. shouldve considered getting an 03+ q45. its not a true drivers car but im satisfied with 340hp 5.9 0-60

hey q_ship. get the mesh grille! its a must for 7's. lmk if you locate those red/clear tails i know someone looking for some also. im usually kind of against those stick on wood-grain kits but my friend just put one on the other day and the quality is great for that particular application. it even came with cutouts for all the tweeters and speaker rings and even for the a/c vents. ill try to post a pic of my friends iL.

word. the 740il is monstrous. the new 745i's look like they got way bulkier and more massive too :uhh:
ill post pics soon..after i can snap them lol he re-did his interior headliner also and painted the plastic pillars and rear deck all in white. i was going to do the same to my car in black. ill try to get a pic of his new headlights, i think he baked them and cleared them out the other day. what other plans did you have for your 7?

I used to hang around a German speedshop all the time(still do every now and then) and I can tell you that those are by far the best looking BMW's ever made in my opinion. My dream car is an '01 740iL with the sport package in it. Maintenance is a little pricey with those, but what do you expect when you buy a top-of-the-line car like that. If you maintain it correctly it shouldn't be much more expensive than owning a Lexus or Infiniti.

I would keep the 740. I've heard the 750 are really really expensive to maintain and replacement parts are quite expensive too. Stick the 740, and if you're craving more power the 740 has more of an aftermarket available for it.

It's more the prestige of having a 750. They come standard with evey option the 740 could get and then some. Plus a wickedly sharp interior.

This is very true. I used to know a BMW mechanic who had a '91 735i and he took absolute care of it. I haven't talked to him in a couple of years, but I remember him taking me for rides in this car and it had over 200k miles on it at the time and it ran perfect.
So yeah, German cars are picky about their maintenance but if you do the proper maintenance they can be really dependable cars.

Just dropping back to say hello. Have done a few things to the car. Color matched the lowers, LED tails (01 look alikes), HID's, JL audio 12" sub. The front is being lowered soon. leaving the rear. This car has been a blast.
