You can carefully sand it with a very fine grit, then wetsand and polish to make crystal clear lenses. Also you can use paints to colour the orange part, I've heard Testors model paint is good for that

On that type of taillights im sure you can NOT do it that way........... some are easier then others.

I meant to remove the frosty look he had left, I dunno if that's what you were referring to as well..

Well, i found some actual taillight dye so i am going to give that a go. I have just started seeing a new product intended for headlights which is a clear stretchy contact that protects them from stonechips and yellowing. Would go nicely over the dyed taillights to protect them from scratching etc...
The inside section is slightly frosted and i am pretty sure i can just polish it. I need to get off my ass and put the lights in the oven again. That sticky stuff is such a pain in the ass to deal with!

Looks good. I've been meaning to remove the amber lenses from mine. Did you heat them up with a heat gun or toss them in the oven?
Dominik
06-13-2006, 10:29 PM
D'oh! I stuck my lights in the oven again last night with the aim of polishing the clear section/redding the orange section and chroming the insides. I believe i have confirmed that 4 minutes at 150 degrees C is just a little bit too much :(
Luckily only the inside section has warped, nothing you can see from the outside, but still disheartening (specially since replacement taillights will have to be ordered from Japan!). I thoroughly recommend the heat gun method now ;D
But I did manage to get them apart. Will paint the insides with chrome paint tonight and start trying to polish the frosted/clear section (first time trying to polish with my dremel!).

Those 97 LED tails are sick. I am not feeling the amber though, you would have to swap that out to white asap
i think the amber is cool since it only lights up amber. looks clear when you're not using the signals.

True, I rather have it that way x100 but I hate amber. The first mod I usually do to my cars is swap all the bulbs for white ones. Ive been too lazy to swap out my signal mirror LED but its killing me. That is going to be my next mod once I get the car back. Imo its worth the ticket you will get once every 3-6 months
huh... i acually like amber light as long as they don't appear orange in the housings, be it led's or those chrome painted bulbs. orange plastics get swapped/modifed.

I love it when someone ignorant behind me high beams me because im going slow over bad roads. I hit the hazards to blind them. Its not like im slowing them down that much since there is a light on just about every corner or a stop sign.
You can def see my hyper White signals during the day, they are real bright. White LEDs on the other hand wouldnt be as bright during the day so I see what you are saying.

Personally, I think lights are very important. A nice set of tail lights and headlights can make your car look like a new model. When I switched my headlights to the President ones, no one could point out what was new with the car but everyone thought the car looked newer. Some even thought it was a new car.
Blackonblack, I was refering to the regular wedge base bulbs that you just plug in. Im sure that even those are now available much brighter but I was just going by what I see on a daily basis and what I experimented with on different cars. Once again, nice work with your custom LED's. I was looking into having them done for my car at one point but got lazy. Its alot of work for newbies.
yeah, regular 3/5mm leds are not safe for car applications. i think your lail lights would be pretty difficult to do because of the shape of them, but thats just from looking at pics. maybe down the line (once i get these done) i will do some 1 off projects and maybe we can do something for you.

Thanks I appreciate it but I couldnt wait and started getting the 05 tail lights fitted to my car since they come with LED's from the factory. The quarter panels, rear bumper and trunk had to be modified. Dont mind the sticker on the trunk, its getting removed and the whole trunk is getting painted.

http://img3.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/e0149dd699.jpgSolini, I noticed the tail on the trunklid has the amber and red lenses cleared. Did you ever do the inner tail red lenses as well? I was browsing the Yahoo Japan Auctions for Y33 tails and I looked at the following pics closer and I noticed they seem to be just oem lamps with the lenses removed from the inside. I guess you sacrifice the red reflectors, but it does give the lamps a more crystalized look.

Or has anyone else already done this? As for leds, I've found some great led bulbs that actually entirely illuminate the housings, but I'm tempted to do the inner red lense removal to get a better effect.

What LEDs are you talking about Benji? Is it those SPIDER LED bulbs that just open up after you install them? I dont know, i remember you doing a bunch of lighting stuff during your MAXIMA and S14 days.

Yeah Benji, I left them intact. After my first tail light attempt I took the bottom half of the outer tail off and didn't really like how it looked. You could see right through the lense and the bulb would be exposed. I also saw those headlights on yaj and still am scratching my head as to what they did different. If all they did was remove that inner part, I'll leave mine as they are, because when I inserted a buld into the housing the color came out pinkish. But then again I wasn't using a led bulb at the time
