How do these kits work? And what is involved in installing HID in a car that did not come with HID from the factory?
I'm talking about kits like this http://www.insurance-group.net/products/insurance/hid/index.html

I don't know how these kits work but they look like you just "plug-n-play." now you can buy HID units that plug into oem harnesses over here. the ones from the link you posted are at most $500 USD + international shipping. Read this below to answer your second question:

Also, you should PM "LexAristo" he put a philips 6000k hid kit into his car that has non-hid headlamps. im guessing you already know about the legality of HIDs depending on where you live.

in most instances (assuming no h.i.d. in the first place):
retrofit > h.i.d. conversion/kit > oem lighting.
www.hidplanet.com may be of some help.

When transporting my car from California to Hawaii, one of my HID bulbs broke, so I looked for a new set.* I found a set that comes out of Asia, which claims to have a true HI/LO beam.* Since the G50 (Q45) has a dual fillament OEM bulb for normal headlight operation, I decided to try out this kit.* Here is a side by side comparison of stock vs HID, in the OEM, NON-HID housings.

I don't picture the HI beams in this picture, but let me tell you, it's crazy bright.* Also note, that the other part of the housing holds another bulb which is activated when the high beams are switched on.

the picture directly above is 4300k HID. factory fogs.
comparison pic above that one compare oem bulbs to 8000k HID. factory fogs
i was going to change the fog lights to 3000k HID, but im just too lazy to get under there and change the bulbs. in order to install a hid kit in the fogs you've got to take off the front bumper, imo. ill get around to it one day.
How are your beam patterns working out for you. Are you running HID fogs too? How do you like your HIS setup on the G50. Is the bema pattern all crazy? Thanks Leroy.
since the headlight housings are not for HID bulbs the light just explodes out of the lens. i changed the pictured HID kit out for another one (5000k), but will probably be putting back the 8000k kit soon. i dont have a good place to take a pictorial comparison, so maybe ill post some pics. but they basically flood the road with light. and the kits that i bought have true hi/low beams, so its really nice when you flick on the high beams for country road driving.

Awesome thanks man. Ill be doing HIDs in the fogs too and i was thinking the same thing about the bumper situation. The FOGS are kind of a PITA to get to. Im just waiting for parts to come in now.

light explodes. not very focused. but better coverage on the road than oem. it almost looks like the other cars dont have their lights turned on, in the last pic. later that night i was driving next to a toyota compact car with oem hid, and my lights were twice as bright on the road.

Actually i just finished installing my HID's in my low beams and fogs. Awesome look and setup. Installing these were pretty fun... :) It was good to get my hands dirty again. I basically took off the front end and wired everything up all nicely. :) I will get pics up soon.
Actually the light patterns on the Q's are not too bad. They are actually very good imho. When i put HIDs in my xB the light was really scattered and not very focused. The lenses on the Q's headlights have patterns in the glass that focus the beam pattern to be more concentrated. The xB had a plastic cover that was just clear with no patterns on it. The way my pattern looks with the HID fogs looks great. I will try to get some good pics of it. :) I would recommend anyone that has a Q to upgrade thier lights to HIDs. You will wonder why you drove so long without them. :)

yeah, once you go HID you will never go back to halogen. you cant see shiet compared to HID. as once said..."Halogen's are for people who can see in the dark. HID's are for everyone else. "

I went with Klight 4300k in my fogs to match my oem HID. Really bright! Luckily its only one bolt to pull out the fog lights.
The Klight kit can be plug in play or it also comes with a relay and harness to power them directly from the battery.

do it, it's well worth it. i've had HID conversions since 1999 when they first hit hte market and were stupid expensive ($800). now my jeep, my lexus and my wrx have conversions. i'll never drive without HID again.

Oh yeah you can find used HID kits for around 100-150 dollars down here. Brand new they run from 200-300 depending where you get them. Of course HiLo kits cost more...
