How do you VIP peeps keep the dust of you dark colored car?

I live in Vegas and I get dust sticking to my newly detailed car after a few hours. Is there a little secret VIP sealant or wax? Thanks!

Car cover.

Don't use the california duster, unless you wish to have scratches all over your car.

Deal with it, or use a quick detailer, that you can spray on, and wipe off the car with. Keep it in your trunk.

I have a cover and I'm afraid to use the Cali duster we have because I could get swirls.

(I have my car for a year now and I barely have a noticeable swirl mark. I do have very little but, it was the dealers fault because they washed my car after I told them not to.)

I used to use the California Car Duster until I heard all the horror stories of swirl marks, and I experienced them myself, and I know people say its how you use it, but I still can't get over how there's a possibility of dragging the dust on the paint. I now just deal with the dust and wash the car after it builds up too much.

clean it real good...polish it...wax it...twice...go to costco...buy a big pack of microfiber towels...wipe your ride down every day...keep it waxed once a month...

The wax you use helps a little. I had waxed the car a few days prior to taking out some bad scratches with rubbing compound. The spots where I used the rubbing compound had more dust then everywhere else.

BTW, I use meguire's nxt synthetic and meguires yellow #26 organic.

I always have my tC in the garage (covered) and I polish it every 6months with a Klasse "A-I-O" with my PC 7424 and I regularly wax it monthly with 100% carnauba or if not, I use Meg's NXT. I also don't bother dusting it because it could simply get huge swirls so, I just wash it with Auto Dry once a month.

I didn't know having a black car is such a pain in the ass. So there is no way to reduce dust from sticking to my car in a couple of hours?

It sucks when my girlfriend keeps telling me to wash my car, even though I just spent 2-4 hours detailing it, and only after a few hours before your date, it's already lightly dusty. I would be nice to keep the "show time" look for say... a day or 2.

I wonder why limos stay clean all the time??? (Anyway. thanks for the tips!)

Limos have driver to take care of the dust =).

One more thing, its normal to think that other people cars is cleaner than yours, no matter how often you clean & detail your car. It happen to me. Just wash & wax it (I wash twice a week & wax once a month) then you'll be fine.

aside from detailing your car with all the zaino products (most of us never have that much time)...you can also use meguiare's nxt generation wax...we use it on most solid black cars at the shop...also works well with hiding swirls...

Every detailer I know uses Cali dusters on their cars, you just don't put ANY pressure on it at all, just let it glide over the paint. However, if you don't live in a dry climate, I wouldn't use it so much. Once your car gets dew / atmospheric moisture on it, the dust sticks when it dries out in the morning, etc.. But if you're somewhere dry like Vegas, or most of SoCal, go for it.

I typically wash once every other week, and dust / spray detail in between, looks perfect, no swirls. Clay bar once a year, looks great.

Man, I was using this steam cleaner at my gf's work place to clean my shoes and I was wondering if they have portable steam cleaners that can be use to clean cars. All it is is warm water that washes at high pressure but dry up quickly so that it doesn't leave spots. Well, no idea if it'll work....but I wonder if it will.

Before I go anywhere, I pull out the micro fiber out of the trunk and use it to remove the dust. Just be sure to shake off the cloth after you dust each panel and also make sure you shake it away from the car.

vegas is a bitch to keep any color clean just because its so freakin dusty out here. All i do is take it to a high pressure car wash and drive it hope to take off the water spots. march madness so its 4 bucks for a wash.

I put a microfiber towel in the dryer for a few minutes, it staticly charges the towel into a dust magnet. After wiping all the dust from the cars surface go back over it with a different clean towel and its dust free. Dust will stick to a car because of static this method will keep it nice for a few days. And if you have access to a pressure washer with a boiler on it use it. It makes a huge difference with a wash. The boiler will get most of the contaminents out of the water and off your cars finish, check around local detail shops if they steam clean engines they should have a boiler. As far as wax goes a local supply company in Md has a product called Magic Wax. I have used it for about 10 years easy on and easy off and lasts a long time. If anyone is getting there car repainted black ask the shop what paint system they use, if they use DuPont ask for the Diamond Clear it is scratch resistant and very stong. It takes a lot of abuse to get swirls and the cobwebs in the paint. I will get the product number if anyone is interested, I have used it on my personal cars and have been very happy.

I can get the product code Mon, It is a scratch resistant clear similar to what Mercedes uses on there black. You have less than 12hrs after full cure to get any dirt nibs out or they are permanent. I can give you an example how durable a fresh paint job is with this clear. I had painted my 70 Charger and was out of town, a storm came and instead of my wife pulling the car in the garage she put an old car cover on it, with 60mph gusts and wind all week it didnt have a single scratch or mark on it. VERY GOOD stuff!! All I had ever done to the Charger is use a spray wax, never buffed. It had always looked like glass.

I believe it may be 72600S but I will be sure Mon. If you get the shop to use this product make sure if it needs to be buffed they have under 12 hours before the clear is fully hardened. Otherwise it will be like polishing asphalt. I would just research the shop you are taking it to and ask to see a car that was recently painted on the lot, not pictures. Look at any imperfections and how they mask the vehicle. Any other questions on paint or body let me know its what I do.

I'm a painter too...i know dupont has different products based on location...for example, i tried finding 7600 in cali but the jobbers down there didn't use that clear because of strict VOC regulations...It's been discontinued since though....

right now i use 7779 on completes and 7776 for small touch ups...other than that, i use 4500 everyday...4500 sounds very simliar to the clear you're talking about...BUT, i definitely don't believe that ANY clear is scratch resistant...4500 buffs like butter when you cut it within a certain time period depending on activator...usually bake it for 15 mins, put it in the sun for a couple hours, pull it inside then let it cool down...if you try to buff it when the car is still warm, you'll burn the car...after the window closes (for example, you paint a black car on friday and don't get a chance to buff it until monday) its extremely hard to buff...even with course compound...

BUT, even if you buff it perfect, it is not scratch resistant after fully cured...and its BS that mercedes are scratch resistant because I see them all the time with choke swirts and other misc. imperfections...

when it comes to clear, anything can be scratched, even if dupont claims its scratch resistant...our detailers can vouch for that...dumbasses...

Can you Clarify the Time to let Paint Cure...

I have herd of LowRiders in Cali Letting there Paint "Cure" for Weeks. Then when they Buff Its Like a Friggin Mirror.

It Let My Old 240sx Cure for 1 Week. Sure Its Harder to Buff but Its Not a Rush Job, Its an Expensive Paint Process. My Clear is Still Very Hard to Scratch and I only used Light Swipes w/ Cali Duster Never any Swirls, Wash once a Week. Carnauba Wax every other Week. Still Show Room Shine After 2 Years.

Here is a Pic of It Fresh Out the Booth with Carnauba Wax. (You can still see the wax by the Bumper.)

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a274/CLUTCH_ONE/My20Silvia20Drop.png

I plan on Letting my LS400 Cure for Weeks after I get a Kit.
My Questionis to all the Painters Out there is have you ever Herd of this Process???

VIP-UCF
03-23-2008, 01:27 AM
everthing depends on the specific product and model number you use but here's how it breaks down...

Freshly painted cars doesn't fully cure until weeks...sometimes even months...although the clear seems dry to the touch, chemicals are still slowly escaping...automotive refinishers are more concerned about quantity...quality too but that comes with years of experience...

talking about the clear fully curing and curing enough to buff are two totally different subjects...the cure time I'm concerned about is when I can buff...not the full cure time of the entire paint job.

So when i refer to curing, i mean time to cut and buff...

after you paint a car, it obviously needs to be nib sanded at the very least...if you color sand too early and the clear hasn't cured, the scratches will come out...if you wait too long, like benzcts said, it will be like buffing asphalt WHEN using certain clears (like 4500)...especially production clears that are made to bake and buff within a few hours...a good way to tell if you're buffing too early is by clogging of your sandpapper when nibbing...

depending on how many panels and the temperature in the booth or prep station, you need to use different activators and when applicable several different reducers...if you use a fast activator with accelerator, you can buff the car a lot sooner than using say, a slow activator with a very slow reducer...

when i was home in cali in sep i painted my aunts supra black and didn't get a chance to buff it until dec...it was a bitch but everything buffed out nicely...it would have been 5x easier though if i had left the car in the sun for 2 days and then buffed it...

and you probably don't get swirls because you keep your paint waxed...

I have heard that everything in Ca. is waterbase, is that true? I have heard that Lacquer paint takes numerous days to cure but it also is high maintenance and dangerous. VIP_UCF on Mercedes from 2005+ they use ceramic particles in their clear from the factory. I had a brand new S in the shop a few weeks ago and it had no orange peel in the finish. Very nice

VIP-UCF
03-23-2008, 10:56 AM
i have heard that cali went 100% waterborne too...i guess they passed new laws so everyone had to convert in the beginning of the year....although some shops had already converted a while back...i'm pretty sure that's just with their basecoats though...all the clear should still be urethane...i'll know when i get down there and start using standox...

laquer is old school...the good thing about laquer is you can put on as many coats as you want...the old school guys use to put 10-15 coats...not all at once though...at most 5 at a time...and it comes out like glass...if you burn the car, just spray some more laquer...its like a caveman system where you just tape and spray...the newer paint systems have a more durable finish but requires a lot more prep work...

i've heard of the new nano-technology mercedes uses...i just painted the whole front clip on a mercedes S550...i think the paint code was C040...it was pretty much straight 805...but whenever i paint a front end, i always put flex additive...helps resist chipping and provides more strength from road debris...merceds usually has a nicer overall finish...BMW's always have choke choke orange peel...

orange peel is not always bad...better than layin down clear like glass...

of all the manufacturers, i think lexus has the best factory finish...

^^^ YES! a few minutes of driving is enough to make it dusty. You have got to be VIP when it's kept clean since, it's being done for you xD.

It takes about 2 hours in the garage to make a nice black car dusty after an excruciating detail job.
