View Full Version : Ghetto-est setup

Well, today while cleaning my car I got an idea.
I thought of using my old Kenwood amp that I'd been using with a garbage sub in the house, in the car.
So, 1 extension cord and a RCA cable later, I had my amp getting power from the parking stall plug and sound from my headunit. Low & behold, it worked! So I cleaned up the audio wire and put the amp and oversized box (1 cubic foot for a 8" :uglystupid2:) in the trunk...now to solve the issue of the extension cord hanging out of my trunk...I needed to go portable!
So, one trip to The Source (by Circuit City) later I was running the amp from my 12v dash plug, via a 12->110 inverter and a big blue extension cord going from the dash, through my back seat.
And that's where I'm at now. It sounds horrible as far as sound quality but it makes a lot of satisfying noise. I can also adjust the sub level from my seat thanks to my headunit's gazillion features.
Next step is running a 12v to the trunk so I can install a second 12v plug to eliminate the big blue cord that bisects my car :idiot2:
So, do I win the "ghettoest setup" award? :2funny:
Actually, jokes aside, I think this is a pretty cool setup. Once I get around to making a properly sized and properly sealed box for my sub and a little beauty-boarding in the trunk, it should be pretty dope looking.

Why not just buy a $50 amp and $50 sub off ebay? Then $20 worth of MDF and you would have a proper car audio setup without the inverter introducing additional noise into the system!
If you are going to put home amps into your car, you should at least go with a Tube amplifier!

'cuz the inverter only cost $34 bucks, instead of the $120 for your idea :P
It's more of a temporary joke anyways, I'm waiting for the bills to buy Pagong's amps.

Not his Orions, his 3 Infinitys, they were in the F/S section a while back.
What did I do different? Well, instead of getting power from the battery to a 12v amp, I ran an extension cord from my dash to a home amp. It's nothing special actually, it's just particularly ghetto, I thought you guys might enjoy a look at the lighter side of car audio. ;D

Update:
The trunk is now bearing a Kenwood KAC829 (thanks Brandon!) and an Alpine Type-E 10". Pics will get posted when I get everything strapped down nicely.

Uhhh yeah, back to an empty trunk now. All my stuff got jacked (amp, box, sub) while I was at work, luckily no damage, they did a clean break in.
I think I'll buy an alarm with a 2 way remote before buying another trunk setup.
callaghan.
