Default Hooking up HID lights / factory wires or Relay ?

whats up guys , i have a 98 ' Q45 . non hid car. few years ago i put an hid kit in that was suposed to be plug and play. everything did plug in , but always had a problem with one of the 2 blallest not powering up. i would have to turn the head light swich on and off a few times to get both powered up together. got fed up with it and put factory bulbs back.
---> My question now is i just got a set of factory 2000 hid head lamps (complete factory hid setup ) and i am going to be hooking them up this weekend and curious to know if i am going to have to run an additional power relay ? If the factory harness has a relay on the headlight whats going to be differents with the relay i will put in ?
does the factory harness not supply enough amps to power up the ballest?

ps-->i removed the fog light bulbs and hooked up hid light in my fogs using factory wiring with no problems at all . how could the fog light harness supply more amprage then the headlight harness? ???
    Thanks ....

I am having the same problems as u but on my GS. Sometimes the one of the 2 hid's are not coming on. I would turn the head lights off and on..then all is well.

they are plug and play. Also there is 2 types of bulbs 1: for non-factory HID and 2: for OEM HID replacement.

make sure you got for the non-factory replacement HID kit.( not sure on the type of bulb from the top of my head. D2l or something like that.)
edit: found out the bulbs types: D2S and D2R

also if they arent turning on most of the time its bc the bulbs dont work. return the bulbs usualy the warranty covers that(depending on who you bought them from) if that doesnt work then it might be the whole HID system including the module. when I used to work at a shop we used to have that type of problem all the time.

hopefully that gives you a we bit of help best of luck.

You can troubleshoot what the problem is yourself. First check all grounds to make sure that there is no arcing. Second, test the ballasts by swapping them to see if the misfire is ballast related. Lastly, swap the bulbs to see if it's bulb/wiring related.

Cheap chinese ballasts are VERY sensitive to voltage/current on start-up...OEM ballasts are not. The problem with rapidly turning them on and off to get them to both start is that HID ballasts are also sensitive to power being cycled before the transformer/capacitor pack if fully discharged.

Running an additional ground from the battery to the chassis is one thing to do, another is to run dedicated grounds for each of the lights. If this still doesn't fix your issue, then a relay with heavy power wire from the battery(10-12AWG) is what you need to do. If you do run power wire directly from the battery, please put a fuse on it withing 18 inches of the battery terminal.

OEM HID Ballasts should not require any of the above, factory wiring should be more than enough.

they make wiring kits for relays to run straight off your battery with 12ga wiring instead of the 16 ga factory wiring designed to pull much less power than HID ballasts. the ballasts use lower power once warmed up, but initially the start up can fry your stock wiring or not give the ballasts enough juice to get going. that being said, if you're using crappy ballasts you can have issues too.

many retrofitters use ddmtuning.com ballasts from their PnP kit. that's what all me and my buddy's with retrofits are using, and none of us have problems running hid's with 55w ballasts and a wiring kit.
